Youth league still waiting for clarity on woman’s death
ALEXANDRA - The African National Congress Youth League has vowed not to rest until those implicated in the death of Aphiwe Zweni two weeks are brought to book.
The African National Congress Youth League has vowed not to rest until those implicated in the death of Aphiwe Zweni two weeks ago are brought to book.
Zweni died at a local clinic after allegedly being beaten by members of the police’s tactical unit which was looking for her boyfriend for alleged criminal offences. She was buried at her home in Cawe, Eastern Cape last weekend.
Her death led to community outrage which culminated when residents led by the youth league, marched to Alexandra Police Station where they presented a list of demands to the acting station commander Ellen Tshabalala. The list included a demand for the removal of the station commander for alleged poor relations with the community, the removal of the tactical unit for allegedly terrorising the community, and the strengthening of the community policing forum.

The league’s branch chairperson Keith Maphutha said the acting station commander had partially responded to the demands by informing them that the matter was being handled by the Independent Police Investigations Directorate, and that the department’s administrative procedures had been instituted, with the six implicated members of the tactical team being suspended and pending criminal charges being laid against them.

Maphutha added that as the other demands had not been responded to, the league would escalate the matter to the MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi Malobane, for action.
“We are not happy with the slow pace of the department in handling this matter and will not rest until justice is meted out. Also, we want the police to take responsibility for the welfare of the deceased’s child,” he concluded.
