Twelve members of the Economic Freedom Front [EFF] appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ court today [20 October] on a case of public violence in Alexandra during the May provincial and national elections.

The case was heard by magistrate Vincent Pienaar and postponed to 27 November to allow for the accused’s legal representative[s] to make interim representation to the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The elections were marred by violence before and after the announcement of the results, and resulted in roads being blocked with burning tyres, overturned bins, the torching of a multi-purpose centre and skirmishes between the police and rioters.
