Preferential treatment for Meyiwa’s murder
JOBURG - The South African Police Service (Saps) is on a three-man hunt following the death of soccer player, Senzo Meyiwa (27) on 26 October in Vosloorus.
This, according to National police commissioner, Riah Phiyega who briefed the media at the South African Police Service Gauteng head office in Parktown on 27 October. She discussed how Saps plans to tackle the investigation of the murder case.
She announced that a multi-disciplinary task team had been established to investigate the murder of Meyiwa.
“The team will be led by the Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner for detective services, Major General Tebello Mosikili,” explained Phiyega.
“Investigators who are forming part of this team are a combination of detectives from the National Investigation and Provincial investigation teams, National and Provincial Crime Intelligence, Visible Policing and the War Room.”
Phiyega dismissed questions and comments from the media that the murder case was receiving preferential treatment. She said, “Whether you are a child in Diepsloot or Reiger, we will offer a reward.”
However, Phiyega firmly said that Saps had to showcase the ability of the South African police force in dealing with such a high profile crime case.
“We want to express our condolences to the family, friends and the soccer fraternity at the sudden and untimely death of Senzo Meyiwa,” said Phiyega. She said investigators were working vigorously to collect evidence. “The police forensic experts are in the process of interviewing witnesses to assist in the facial compilation of the suspects,” she added. “As soon as this is available, it will be released to the media.”
A reward of up to R250 000 has also been announced to be on offer, in return for information of the murder of Meyiwa.
