Children from Thembisa’s Phomolong Child Welfare organisation were given an early festive cheer when Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabo ‘Festival’ Matlaba visited with buckets full of food items.
Matlaba, accompanied by fellow players including Alex player Mpho Makola, was the first of 40 individuals that will get the opportunity to spread festive cheer this season by handing out 100 buckets of food worth over R10 000 to the charity of their choice.
The food is made available by the Shoprite supermarket chain as part of their festive season food donation campaign during which 10 000 buckets filled with non-perishable food items to the value of over R1 million will be distributed to various charities and communities in need across the country over the next few weeks.
Matlaba participated in the retailer’s #Shareforgood campaign, and visited the Phomolong Child Welfare in Thembisa, his place of birth, along with some of his team mates to assist in handing out the food parcels.
The campaign will see FoodBank SA distributing the largest share of 10 000 food buckets to beneficiaries nationwide. while 4 000 buckets had been allocated to 40 influential South Africans in portions of 100 each to make available to charities and communities they support.
FoodBank SA redistributes food in communities with high food insecurity and they have a national-wide footprint of over 1 500 beneficiaries.
