A Tsutsumani family has spent almost a week living in fear after their geyser partly fell through their roof.
The incident had been reported to City Power on numerous occasions. The homeowner, Nomonde Motaung said she was advised by City Power that a maintenance team would be dispatched to do the repairs, but no one had come. The matter was escalated to senior official, Riaan Swanepoel who was told that a locally-based official had reported that the damage was caused because of private alterations done to the home and therefore the city council might not bear responsibility for the repairs.
Motaung said no officials had come to the house and couldn’t possibly have assessed the full extent of the damage from the outside. She added that the geyser had been installed after the alterations.
“They should rather have inspected the house prior to its installation, or should now come repair the damage and take away their geyser which can fall into the house or bathroom anytime injuring or killing someone,” she fumed.
She said the local councillor Joyce Ngwenya couldn’t be reached by phone which was on voicemail.
Swanepoel promised to send an assessment team to assess the damage.
