Motorist kills cellphone thief by driving over him
ALEXANDRA - An angry Eastbank motorist followed his cellphone robber and rammed and killed him from behind.
An angry Eastbank motorist who had just had his cellphone stolen by two thieves followed them in his car and ran over the suspects, killing one.
The motorist was sitting in his car with his girlfriend outside his home in the posh suburb of Eastbank in Alexandra on 9 December when they were approached by two men, one armed with a firearm at about 9.45pm.
The armed man pointed a firearm at the couple and demanded that they had over their cellphones. The couple complied and handed the only cellphone in their possession and then the robbers casually walked away.
The motorist then followed the robbers in his car and knocked both of them down. The unarmed robber got up and ran for his life while the other robber remained on the ground. The victim then called the police.
On arrival, the police examined the suspect on the ground and found that he had severe injuries. A Norico firearm with 14 rounds of ammunition and a spare magazine were found next to the suspect.
Police rushed the suspect to Edenvale General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were still hunting for the suspect that fled the scene, said Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela.
This incident comes barely a month after another motorist witnessed an armed hijacking on the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Street and 8th Avenue. The motorist shouted at the suspects and one of them allegedly turned around and tried to shoot at him.
The motorist apparently shot first hitting the armed suspect who tried to flee the scene, but collapsed and died a few streets away. The suspect turned out to be Alex’s most wanted hijacker.
