Special meal for special people

More than 30 employees of Midrand-based ICT services company, T-Systems, took time off from their busy schedule and descended on Alexandra to feed more than 200 children at Abangani eNkosini Children Home.
Dees Pillay, a service delivery manager at T-Systems, which is an ICT services outsourcing company, said as staff of the company, they had decided to forgo their end-of-the-year function at the Department of Water and Sanitation in order to do something for the less privileged members of the community.
Pillay said they drove around Alexandra and visited a couple of children’s home to assess their needs and capacities. At the end of the trip, he said they decided to settle for Abangani eNkosini as it had a high volume number of orphanage children being taken care of.
Pillay said the staff members then decided to use the money they contributed for their party for a charitable cause. T-Systems then matched whatever money the workers raised and then “we bought the food for the special little people of this home, which comprised buckets of tasty KFC chicken portions, mash and gravy, bread and rolls and goodie bags for the children to take away”.
Founder of the home, Portia Mongake, said she felt so much honoured to have had the T-System people at her children’s home to put smiles in the faces of the children during the festive season which she described as a time for giving.
“In African societies, KFC is a special meal and I am grateful to them for having made this festive season so special for the children.” Mongake urged her visitors to look beyond the meals as well to make the educational experience of these children lovable.
“I wish I could have a long term relationship with T-Systems where they can also look into the stationery and uniform requirements of the children”, to which Pillay replied that he was quite pleased to announce that they would adopt the home as their charity of choice.
“You can now expect to see more of us more often here. We have decided that this will not be a once-off project but one that ensures sustainability of the project we have just started,” Pillay said.
