A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of R1 500 from a tavern owner.
The tavern owner said he had placed the cash on top of the stove while selling beer to his customers. As his helper was still away on holidays, the tavern owner said he had to shuffle between the front and backrooms to fetch stock.
In one of these trips, he left the money on the stove and rushed to fetch more stock. On his return to the front he met one of his foremost customers, whose name is known, trying to rush out of the house.
As the tavern owner tried to block him, the customer managed to slip past and run away. The tavern owner only realised after the customer had gone that the money was missing.
He then rushed to his customer’s home in 19th Avenue but he was nowhere to be found. The tavern owner then reported the case to the police, who later arrested the customer. He will appear soon in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on a charge of theft.
