Suspect arrested for theft out of motor vehicle

ALEXANDRA - Police arrested a man who allegedly broke into his neighbour's car and stole several items, among them the car battery.

Police have arrested a man who allegedly broke into his neighbour’s car and stole several items including the car battery.

The victim said he had parked his car in the early hours of 19 March at about 2:30am, closed all the windows and locked all the doors. Five minutes later, he received a call from his neighbour saying there was somebody inside the car.

When the victim went to check, he found the driver’s door had been broken into and when he checked further, he noticed the battery was missing, as well as other items such as the USB for playing music, radiator and power steering caps, the phone charger and cigarette lighter.

The neighbour told the victim that he suspected it was one of their other neighbours who had broken into the vehicle. Police were called and the suspect’s house was pointed out. Several knocks on the door went unanswered and the police then broke the lock to gain entry.

They found the suspect sleeping inside. They also discovered a battery that the victim identified as his own and two tyres belonging to the neighbour who had made the tip-off.

The suspect was arrested and will soon appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court in connection with a charge of theft out of motor vehicle.
