Premier Soccer League CEO Brand de Villiers has conveyed condolences to the family of the late Steve ‘Kalamazoo’ Mokone.

Mokone, a footballer and one of the many legends of the game in South Africa, passed away in the United States of America where he was recently based. De Villiers said, “Unfortunately like many people here in South Africa, I never had an opportunity to watch him play, but from what I’m told, he was one of the finest sons to come out of this country.”

“He put South Africa on the map both in Europe and in the United States. We remain indebted to the likes of Steve Mokone for the role he played in opening doors for many players. On behalf of the clubs, we would like to send our condolences to his family during this difficult period.”

Mokone was born on 23 May 1932. During his colourful career outside South Africa, he played for a number of clubs including Barcelona, Cardiff City, Coventry City, Marseille, Durban Bush Bucks among others.

The league observed a moment of silence during the Nedbank Cup last 16 fixtures last weekend in memory of Mokone, late minister Collins Chabane and JB Marks.
