Vincent Tshabalala Road still London Road on N3
ALEXANDRA - Alex residents have adapted to calling former London Road by its now legitimate name Vincent Tshabalala.
Although Alex residents have starting calling former London Road by its new name, Vincent Tshabalala Road, in the township, road signs still bear the old London Road name on the N3.
Those travelling on the N3 freeway have not yet been given a chance to adopt the change which was promulgated in 2008 with the new name posted on all intersections in the township as part of its reconstruction and development programme. This as the Department of Roads and Transport still maintains the old name on the off-ramps to the township from the freeway.
The new name was given in honour of Tshabalala, an MK cadre who perished in a shootout with police in 1985 at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 12th Avenue.
The department did not respond to this paper’s request for any explanation as to why the road signs were not yet changed by time of publication.
