DA lobbies for domestic worker UIF
ALEXANDRA - The Democratic Alliance is lobbying the Department of Labour to include more domestic workers in the unemployment and maternity benefits of the Unemployment Insurance Fund [UIF].
The Democratic Alliance is lobbying the Department of Labour to register more domestic workers for the Unemployment Insurance Fund so they can benefit from unemployment and maternity leave.
Ian Ollis MP and DA Shadow Minister of Labour said their action was to restore legal rights of 80 percent of these workers following the revelation by the fund’s commissioner, Boax Seruwe that only 20 percent of domestic workers were covered. He said the action sought immediate attention as the fund wasn’t struggling for money as it had investment assets worth R112 billion.
Ollis added that they requested the Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant to review the 2015/16 UIF Strategic Plan to increase the targeted employer registration.
