Feel the rush of Jozi’s Intercontinental Village

JOBURG - Champions Day at Turffontein race course on 25 April is fast approaching and event launch saw the eagerly awaited charity draw being conducted.

Champions Day at Turffontein racecourse on 25 April is fast approaching and an event launch saw the eagerly awaited charity draw being conducted.

The draw paired each horse running in the Grade 1 SA Derby with one of the 11 communities which will be showcased on the big day in the popular on-course Intercontinental Village. The communities will in turn each be representing a charity and a media partner, Alex News included, which has drawn the horse, Save the Rhino with the charity being Reach For A Dream and Ferrari as the community.

The Derby runners will earn money for the charity partners based on their finishing positions. There was much anticipation ahead of the draw and the representatives of the Ivory Coast were delighted when they drew the likely SA Derby favourite, French Navy.

Money raised will be donated to charity in the following manner: R45 000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby winner, R30 000 for the charity partner of the SA Derby runner-up, R15 000 for the third-placed horse, R10 000 for fourth and R5 000 for any other finishing position.

The 11 different communities in the Intercontinental Village will be showcasing their cultures through food stalls, craft, costumes and on-stage dancing. There is also much to look forward to from a racing purist point of view as the meeting features five Grade 1 events and four Grade 2s, including the Grade 1 R2 million SA Derby and Grade 1 R1 million SA Oaks, which form the respective last legs of the SA Triple Crown and the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara.
