ALEXANDRA - The Alex Magistrate's Court has imprisoned a Soweto woman to two years for fraud.
The Alex Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a Soweto woman to two years for fraud.
Nonhlanhla Ndlovu (29) was found guilty of cloning a hotel client’s bank card which was used for a purchase by two of her accomplices who are still at large.
The court heard that Ndlovu had been deployed by an employment agency to the Hilton Hotel in Sandton where she was a cleaner, and assigned to a room occupied by a pilot.
The pilot is said to have left his room for a gym while Ndlovu was cleaning. She went through his belongings and skimmed the card with a cloning device and gave the conned information to the two accomplices. The two reproduced the card and used it to purchase goods worth R87 600 from a truck company.
The victim was notified of the transaction by internet banking, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest and police discovering the cloning device at her home. Ndlovu admitted guilt.
A legal expert said cloning was common and is used to siphon money from people’s accounts without them suspecting anything. He said workers at restaurants and other businesses illegally captured customers’ bank details which were then reproduced on empty cards for fraudulent use.
