LISTEN: Recycling helps musician fulfill his dream

ALEXANDRA - A recycling business is helping to keep a man’s dream in the music industry alive.

Recycling is helping to keep a man’s dream of working in the music industry alive.

Wonderful Moyo (40) aka Wonder Rhymes from Rasta Village, Extension 8 was influenced by Michael Jackson’s music when he was in Grade 3.

His musical dream has been on and off due to financial constraints which drew him to the recycling business. Recycling nets him R3 000 per month, but it requires determination. He has to wake up early to collect bottles, cardboard, plastic and scrap metal before Pikitup removes the waste bins.

It also requires him to put aside his pride as scavengers are looked down upon by society.

“More importantly, [recycling] contributes to keeping the city streets clean as part of my citizenship responsibility,” he said.

With his savings, Moyo’s music career is slowly taking shape and he has recorded a CD which is still to be named, labelled and promoted. Songs on the album include Millionaire City, Dear Mama, What Grows Up, Boy As To Girl, Make Up Your Mind and Hey Better Do. The CD was co-produced with Dumisa Nhlapo aka Dumsta and was recorded at Chameleon Studio.

Even if his music career takes off, Moyo sees himself continuing in the recycling business. “People need to care for their place and environment irrespective of social standing,” he said.
