As it approaches Nelson Mandela Day, we find out from the people of the city their fondest memories of the struggle icon.
SAKHILE SIKHONDE: My fondest memory of Nelson Mandela was when he was released from prison because, obviously, that’s when we, as black people, gained our freedom.
BENNY MASHIKE: My first memory was when my father introduced me to him. I remember him as a cool, chilled, nice man. He was like a grandfather to me.
THANDO VILAKAZI: He did a lot of great things for the nation. I’ll remember what he did for me as a black South African.
