Man sentenced to 8 life terms and 861 years

ALEXANDRA - A 30-year-old Kagiso man who targetted a variety of suburbs was sentenced last week to eight life terms and 861 years imprisonment for rape, house robberies and vehicle hijackings will luckily spend only one life term in prison, as nature dictates that a person lives only one life on earth.

A 30-year-old man from Kagiso, a township in the west of Johannesburg, who targeted a variety of suburbs was sentenced last week to eight life terms and 861 years imprisonment for rape, house robberies and vehicle hijackings. The sentences will run concurrently.

Lucky Murovhi was sentenced on 31 July by the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court sitting in Kagiso after pleading guilty to 62 counts of crimes committed in Pretoria, Midrand, Mondeor, Randburg and Roodepoort from 2008 until his arrest in 2012.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Murovhi terrorised more than 50 victims.

In all, he was found guilty on eight rape charges, 29 housebreakings and 10 hijackings. He was further charged with escaping from custody on several occasions, after which he moved to different locations where he continued his unlawful acts.

Pindi Louw of the NPA said given natural reality, Morovhi will unfortunately only serve one term. She said he wasn’t, and will not be, the last person to receive such stiff sentencing as crime is part of society. Louw added that the number of crime incidents could be reduced if communities collaborated with law enforcement and reported them before they were committed.

“Crimes are societal and we rely on members of the public who witness any sort of crime to report it to law enforcement agencies in time,” Louw said.

She also urged the public to act cautiously in whatever they do in their daily lives to avoid becoming victims to criminals who are always looking for opportunities.

Morovhi seemingly acted alone, which the NPA said was proof that individuals alone could wreak havoc, and so much still has to be done to build a united society that is prepared and willing to assist in the fight against crime so as to reclaim communities from heartless criminals.
