Petrol pump attendants charged for R120 000 petrol theft

ALEXANDRA - Four petrol station attendants are pending sentencing by the Alexandra Magistrate Court for theft of petrol estimated at R120 000 at their place of employment.

Four petrol station attendants appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on a charge of theft of petrol estimated at R120 000.

Another court date will be set after further investigations have been concluded. The four accused are said to have lost their jobs.

Blessing Ndlovu (21), Lucky Mhlongo (28), Kabelo Mofokeng (31) and female attendant Busisiwe Zulu (31), who all worked at the station on the corner of 4th Street and Old Pretoria Road , pleaded guilty to the charges said to have been committed on several dates between 3 and 25 May this year.

The court heard that their crime was discovered by the petrol station owner after he noticed that the security cameras in the shop had been tampered with. There were no recorded activities linking the cash register transactions in the shop with the employees’ activities at the pumps outside. This enabled the four to defraud the business of the estimated amount in unaccounted petrol and paraffin.

In mitigation, the four expressed shock at the amount of money involved. They argued that the business wasn’t that busy to generate that amount of money, and that they were part-time employees which made it impossible for them to have stolen that much.
