Security guard shot, hospitalised in botched hijacking
ALEXANDRA - A private company security guard was this morning shot and taken to hospital for injuries on the right knee sustained in an attempted robbery by a group of armed men in Tsutsumani.
A private security guard was recently shot and taken to hospital for injuries to his right knee sustained in an attempted hijacking by a group of armed men in Tsutsumani, Alex.
Witnesses said the incident occurred at about 10am after the armed men, who were driving a Mercedes Benz Vito, shot at two security guards in a private security vehicle escorting a cigarette delivery van.
The witnesses said they heard five shots being fired, allegedly by the would-be hijackers, who they saw fleeing in their vehicle. They said the vehicles were attacked at a shop on the corner of Roosevelt Street and Lenin Drive. They alleged that they also saw an uninjured security guard running way with his rifle.
Confirming the incident, Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said eight young men attempted, but failed, to rob the security guards or the van they were escorting. He said when the men got close to the security guards’ car, they opened their car windows and fired shots from rifles. The guards returned fire causing the robbers to flee without taking anything.
He said in the process one of the guards sustained an injury to the right knee and was taken by ambulance to hospital. No one else was injured.
Maphakela added that police were investigating a case of attempted murder and hijacking.
