Man arrested for accident scene theft
ALEXANDRA - A 25 year old man from 15th Avenue has been remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrate Court for alleged theft from a victim of a motor car accident which happened on the same avenue last week.
An Alex man from 15th Avenue has been remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing from a victim of a motor car accident which happened on the same avenue on 11 August.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the 25-year-old man was arrested on the day of the accident after stealing a car battery from one of the two vehicles involved in the crash, a Kia truck. The theft is said to have occurred when the victims of the accident were still struggling with their trauma and were being assisted by the police.
Maphakela said the man stole the battery from underneath the truck, but was noticed by members of the public who alerted the police. The suspect was then arrested and the battery was recovered. He will reappear in court on 18 August for his bail application.
