Combating crime is Chisari’s main objective

ALEXANDRA - Minimising the rampant crime in Alexandra is the main objective of the newly elected leader of the Alexandra Community Police Forum (CPF).

Minimising the rampant crime in Alexandra is the main objective of the newly-elected leader of the Alexandra Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Benjamin Chisari, who was elected chairperson of the CPF in an acrimonious meeting at the Alexandra Police Station, has vowed to hit the ground running in the new executive’s endeavour to secure the crime-ridden streets of the township.

In his victory speech, Chisari, who was the public relations officer of the previous executive before they fell foul of each other, said the new executive would hold various meetings with all those involved in the crime fighting initiatives to formulate strategies to combat crime.

“Rising crime in the township calls on all of us in the crime fighting initiatives to… up our game and this is precisely what I and my new executive will do,” he said.

“There will be no time wasting on our part. From today, there will be various engagements with a variety of stakeholders to plan and map out our campaign strategies to deal with rampant crime.”

He started his maiden speech by thanking the outgoing executive for their ‘wonderful work, especially the chairperson’ and also expressed his gratitude to the community of Alexandra for ‘vesting their votes, powers and trust in me to lead the fight to bring sanity back to our streets’.

Station commander Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi congratulated the new executive and welcomed it to the Alex policing precincts, saying working together would make a difference to crime levels.

“Your new chairperson is like a son to me and I would like us to stand together as one, even under vilification I want us to walk this journey together to try and make our streets safe for all of us.”

James Khumalo of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, who oversaw the election, urged the new executive to bury the past and start on a clean slate.

“I don’t want to hear the kind of report I heard today. I don’t want personal matters clouding the work of the CPF,” he said.
