Man in court for fraud

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Magistrate Court granted bail of R5000 to a man facing a charge involving the purchase of a motor vehicle.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court granted bail of R5 000 to a man facing a charge involving the purchase of a motor vehicle using fraudulent documents.

He will reappear in court for judgement on 18 September.

The court heard that the man allegedly used fraudulent documents to purchase the car, a Hyundai valued at R245 000, from a Sandton-based car dealership in September last year. The purchase was done through a bank car finance scheme after the man had submitted his application with the required documents. These included a letter proving employment and a bank statement showing three month’s of salary deposits.

On the strength of this, his application for purchase was approved without him having to pay a deposit. However, the suspect was to start with monthly installments of R3 500 from October last year. The man is said to have taken delivery of the car, but when the financiers debited his account for the first installment, it is alleged that the bank only had an account for the man, but no record of deposits into it.

The financiers are said to have tried to contact the suspect but were unable to, as he was seemingly avoiding them. Investigators tracking him managed to locate him in Mpumalanga and enticed him with a fake incentive at the city’s sister branch of the car dealership. The suspect then arrived at the sister branch where he was arrested, charged with fraud and the car repossessed.
