The combination of the right lyrics, rhyme and instruments can build a group identity, stir strong emotions, engage audiences and encourage people to take action.

This according to the founder of Ubuntu Music Group, Jabu Howard, who, in 2011, started the band which aims to inspire people and make a difference in the community .

The music group consists of four members, Howard (guitarist), Mpumelelo Magongo (drummer) and two vocalists, Lungile Ngiba and Thandeka Dlamini.

Ngiba said the group had helped her a lot in her musical development and in coming to terms with challenges she had faced in life.

“I started music in 2013, that was when I joined the group,” she said.

“At the beginning, I did not realise that I had a talent in music. I only realised it after I was sexually abused because I was able to pour out my heart. I think music is the only tool you can use to tell the next person how you feel.”

Howard said he had seen great potential in Ngiba, and ever since, she had improved as a vocalist.

The band’s founder said they wanted to use their music to inspire other people and encourage ubuntu within the community of Alexandra. He added that as much as they wished to make a difference through their music, they had not benefited from their talents.

“We do not have financial backing, we are living from hand to mouth. We want people who can help and sign us and mentor us,” he said.
