Taxi driver nabbed allegedly raping minor in taxi

ALEXANDRA - An Alex taxi driver is in police detention awaiting trial for a rape case involving a minor.

An Alex taxi driver is in police detention awaiting trial for a rape case involving a minor.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the man was allegedly caught by Metro police at 7.30am on 30 September raping a minor in his white Toyota Avanza taxi at Marlboro Cemetery.

Maphakela said its alleged that the man had followed the child walking to school alone along one of the streets in Alex and asked her to get into the taxi so he could take her to school. When she refused, he threatened to kill her and forced her into the taxi. He drove to the cemetery where he then allegedly told her to undress. When she refused, he again threatened to kill her. Metro police on patrol spotted the taxi and found him allegedly raping the child, resulting in his arrest.

Maphakela said police were concerned about several reports of rape in Avanza taxis. “One was reported in July, another in August and two including this one were reported in September.”

He said police were investigating the three other incidents and appealed for the public’s assistance in identifying the culprits.

Alex Police Station’s acting commander Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi in this paper’s article Welcome aboard, week ending 3 July, expressed concern about reported rape cases, in particular, those occurring in sacred places such as cemeteries.

Meanwhile, Maphakela said the Avanza rapist suspect has been linked to another case which he is said to have admitted committing, but denies another case that allegedly police pinned on him.

“He is expected to appear in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon with charges of two counts of rape,” Maphakela said.
