Men remanded in custody on murder charge
ALEXANDRA - Two Alex men have been remanded in custody pending trial at a later date for the murder of another man.
Two Alex men have been remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation into a murder.
The two suspects, Muzi Mbatha and Senzeni Vilakazi, were remanded on 5 October for the murder of Alex resident, Lahliwe Tjege, and will reappear in court once investigations are completed.
The court heard that at about 5am on 31 May, the two suspects approached a group of men seated around a fire on 8th Avenue, Alex. The suspects allegedly held knives and shouted at the group the names of two men they were looking for. One of the names shouted was that of the deceased. The group, startled by the shouting, then stood up. The accused then allegedly targeted Tjege and a fight ensued. Mbatha allegedly stabbed the victim once in the chest before fleeing the scene with his accomplice.
The group around the fire, some of whom are now witnesses in the murder case, are said to have waved down a passing motorist who took Tjege to Alex Clinic where he was certified dead on arrival.
The incident was reported to Alex police, who then found the suspects near the scene and subsequently arrested them.
