Father commits robbery while on parole

ALEXANDRA – A 45-year-old Alex man may see his prison term increased as he committed offences while on parole.

A 45-year-old Alex man who was recently sentenced to four years in prison by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for robbery and theft, may see his prison term increase as he committed the offence while on parole.

The court heard that the accused, who has three children aged 20, 15 and 12 and is estranged from his wife, robbed a Sandringham man of his car and identity document in December last year. He had been granted parole in 2010 after serving eight of his 18-year sentence for a robbery he committed in Hillbrow in 2002.

His case has now been referred to the Parole Board to consider the relevant punitive measures for his violation of his parole condition.

He was found guilty of stealing a VW Golf that had been left idling outside the owner’s yard while he was was closing the garage door and yard gate.

The man is said to have appeared from nowhere, and when the owner realised his car was being driven off, he gave chase and clung to the drivers’ side window, which was open. The accused is said to have increased speed but the owner clung on for about 150m when he fell off and broke his ankle.

The incident was reported to the police who later found the car in Botlhabela Ext 2 in Eastbank that same day with the robber inside, leading to his arrest. He was also found in possession of the victim’s identity document.

The victim was hospitalised and is still in recovery. Both the car and identity documents have been returned to him.
