Tip-off leads to 5 arrests
ALEXANDRA – A man who had been released on bail was among five suspects allegedly arrested on their way to rob a shop.
The much-needed co-operation between police and the community has led to the arrest of five men, allegedly on their way to rob a shop.
Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said one of their officers in the detectives section had been given information about a planned robbery.
Detective Major Zwane had received a tip-off that five men in a Toyota Avanza were on their way to rob a shop at the corner of Richard Baloyi Street and 13th Avenue. The informant told Zwane that the man seated in the front passenger seat was armed and he gave a description of the clothes he was wearing.
Zwane rushed to 12th Avenue where he mounted a mini roadblock and stopped the Avanza whose registration had been given to him, and ordered everybody out of the vehicle. He then searched all the occupants, starting with the armed suspect and retrieved a 9mm pistol hidden inside his pants. No firearms were found on the other four suspects.
It turned out that the armed suspect is allegedly a well-known car hijacker who was out on bail. All five men will appear soon in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
