A spaza shop owner in Alexandra was recently sentenced to three years in prison wholly suspended for five years for perjury by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
Solomon Wolde was found guilty by the court for lying under oath.
This after he, on 26 July, made a fictitious report about how he was assaulted and robbed of R1 500 cash and of a cellphone worth R2 000 by one of his customers.
This led to the customer’s arrest on 28 July. On 30 July, the shop owner went to the police and said he wanted to withdraw the case as he had lied.
He revealed that he had reported out of anger after a fight with the customer. This led to the release of the customer and the shop owner’s arrest.
The shop owner received bail of R1 000 pending the court hearing and was thereafter charged.
