A police officer and two hijackers were injured in a shootout that resulted in the three being taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment this mid-morning (30 November). The hijackers will be placed under police guard.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the incident, which involved four hijackers, two of whom escaped and are wanted, occurred after Alex police on patrol on the corner 6th and Alfred Nzo Avenues signalled for the driver to stop.
Maphakela said that, instead, the driver sped off resulting in a car chase, with the hijackers shooting at the police who retaliated until the car came to a halt in a driveway at the corner of 19th and Alfred Nzo avenues with the three already injured. The police officer sustained gunshot wounds to the right leg and the two hijackers had gunshot wounds to the left legs. Maphakela said the vehicle was found to have been reported stolen in Jeppe earlier this month. A preliminary investigation also revealed that one of the
hijackers is suspected to have been involved in a house robbery in Bramley View early this morning. The police are still processing the vehicle, and couldn’t verify if any firearms were recovered.
Witnesses on the scene said they heard several volleys of gunshots and saw people running off after the hijackers’ vehicle came come to a stop.
