Robber set for identity parade for attempted murder
ALEXANDRA - A man serving an 8 year sentence passed on him by the Alexandra Magistrates' Court for attempted theft will appear before an identity parade on a date still to be set for the alleged murder of a university professor in December 2014.
A man already serving an eight-year sentence handed down to him by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for attempted theft, will now also appear in an identity parade on a date still to be set.
This is in relation to the murder of retired Wits University professor Hans Kundig from whose house, he was arrested for the attempted theft.
Its suspected that he committed the theft as he knew that the house was by then not occupied after Kundig’s death. The murder is still under investigation.
Kundig died in February after suffering from head wounds inflicted during a robbery in December last year.
The accused, Amon Phangisa, was arrested weeks after Kundig’s death after he was found tampering with the electricity box at the deceased’s home in Blue Hills, Midrand.
Upon investigation into the theft, police found that some of the deceased’s household items were missing from the home but nothing was found in Phangisa’s possession when he was arrested.
The deceased’s domestic worker, and witness in the murder trial, said he approached the professor’s house on the morning of 19 December last year and he saw someone entering the house through the open front door holding a hammer. He claimed to have heard his employer calling for help.
When he got close to the door, the domestic worker saw the deceased’s shoes outside and suspected foul play. The intruder appeared at the door and threw the hammer at the domestic worker. The domestic worker then fled to a neighbour, and when they returned, the intruder had already left the house and they found the professor bleeding from the forehead.
The employee described the suspect’s facial features, clothes and language to the court. Results of DNA testing will also form part of the evidence to see whether or not Phangisa is also guilty of the murder of Kundig.
