ALEXANDRA - Girls’ rugby is gradually gaining a foothold in Alexandra following a determination by the Alexandra Rugby Football Club to develop the sport in the township.
Girls’ rugby is gradually gaining a foothold in Alexandra following a determination by the Alexandra Rugby Football Club to develop the sport in the township.
Club manager Elias Mpengu said the girls’ rugby project was started in August this year with 12 girls playing Sevens Rugby for the club and so far they have played a game against Mandisa High School in Kagiso.
“We have implemented a programme in the schools in Alexandra to begin a league of U9 girls who will be playing Tag Rugby as part of the development of the sport in the township,” Mpengu said.
Mpengu said the Schools Rugby League will act as a feeder for the club and said the seeds were being planted and hope to see them germinate and then grow into fully-fledged players of the sport.
