WATCH: SA’s finest dazzle the crowd at Maftown Heights Music Fest

JOBURG - The sixth annual Maftown Heights Music Festival held at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown was one for the books as South Africa's finest musicians dazzled the crowd.

The event celebrates the hip-hop sub-genre known as Motswako, which is a mixture of Setswana and English rap. The festival has also become a stepping stone for up and coming artists.

The festival has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, and it was the third time it was hosted at an outdoor venue. An estimated 13 000 people packed the Mary Fitzgerald Square.

Former St John’s College pupil, Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, did not disappoint the crowd with his performance as he became the first non-Motswako hip-hop artist to close off the show.

The co-founder of the festival, Khuli Chana who’s real name is Khulane Morule, was delighted with the turnout and thanked everyone who helped make the festival possible.

Event organiser Refileo Ramogase said R10 of every ticket purchased would be donated to needy students as support towards the #feesmustfall campaign.

“We are especially proud to be partying with a purpose as part of the proceeds of the festival from this year and every year, henceforth, will go towards assisting deserving students with tertiary funding,” said Ramogase.
