Shot victim holds attacker until his arrest

ALEXANDRA - A 52 year old Alex man is lucky to be alive and is recuperating after a shooting by one of four alleged robbers who also assaulted him and his daughter.

An Alex man (52) is lucky to be alive and is recuperating in hospital after four robbers assaulted his daughter and shot him.

The man-turned-hero held on to the robber, who allegedly shot him, until other residents helped and police arrived on the scene and subsequently arrested the suspect.

The accused appeared in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for attempted murder and robbery and was remanded in custody while investigations continue.

The court heard that at about 7.45pm on 16 November, the accused and his accomplices entered the victim’s house on 5th avenue, Alex, where he was with his daughter.

They pretended to be customers wanting to buy jeans. He showed them several sizes and they selected one size which they promised to return to collect. It is said they suddenly produced firearms and searched the two victims. The suspects allegedly stole two cellphones and R465 in cash.

The accused is alleged to have fired at the victims and hit the man, but the daughter managed to escape into a neighbour’s shack. The shot hit the man in the abdomen and the bullet exited his back. The man is said to have tackled the four robbers to the ground, but three managed to flee, leaving the victim in a tussle with the accused. Residents helped to hold the accused until police arrived and arrested him.

The suspect’s rifle was collected from the scene and was sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used to commit other crimes. The stolen items were not recovered and the accused’s accomplices are still at large.
