Station commander encourages stakeholder involvement
ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra police station’s acting commander Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi is hoping to involve all key community stakeholders in crime fighting.
The Alexandra Police Station’s acting commander, Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi hopes to involve all key community stakeholders in crime-fighting initiatives.
This after the township recently re-elected a new executive of the Alexandra Community Policing Forum (CPF) which Zondi said was functioning well and has the potential to impact crime levels in the community.
She said they had already met tavern operators who committed to collaborate by adhering to trading laws and that they would like to meet property owners in the homes which have been converted into businesses, where a lot of crime takes place. “We have also met one taxi association and want to engage the other association to agree on strategies to curb taxi-related violence before it can erupt,” she said.
Zondi is also looking forward to engage further with traditional healers and leaders as they commanded the respect of most residents.
“Unfortunately, some of the healers tend to, deliberately or not, promote crime through the sale of love potions to people wanting to strengthen their relationship, but unfortunately some of the potions result in victims falling ill. Other muti [traditional medicine] potions are sold to criminals, especially robbers, for protection and we discover this in their possession when they are apprehended,” she concluded.
