Gauteng FC may have come second best against FC Godisanang but their grit will linger longer in the minds of Alex lovers of the beautiful game.
Both teams displayed entertaining football in the Year End Tournament final won 4-2 by Godisang at Alexandra Stadium. The game was spiced with deft touches and dribbling wizardry that sent spectators into song in praise of their stars on the pitch.
The players of both teams were not shy in taking on their opposite numbers, showing off their nimble skills that delighted the crowd on the only grandstand of the unkempt stadium.
Godisanang’s Moriberia Sebati seemed to enjoy himself the most in the game as he scored a brace in the six-goal thriller. Sebati gave his team the lead just before the floodlights of the stadium failed, causing a temporary stop to the match.
When the lights came back on, Gauteng’s Matthews Nthithe equalised but the celebration was short-lived as Sebati grabbed his brace to restore his team’s lead. Substitute and perennial Godisanang star striker Ronny Makitla increased their lead to 3-1.
Gauteng captain Sandile Zungu grabbed the second goal for his team, but Godisang’s Gaugelo Maboe put the final nail in the coffin of the Gautengers with a last-gasp goal which was followed by the referee’s final whistle.
