Kgololo has its first graduates

ALEXANDRA - The newest kid on the education block in Alex, Kgololo Academy on 2nd Avenue, hosted a memorable graduation ceremony for its Grade R pupils.

The event coincided with the festive mood and first anniversary of the school which offers university preparatory education from an early phase. The event on 11 December was attended by a packed audience of pupils, family members, friends and supporters to witness the Grade R pupils receive commendations.

Grade R pupils, Siphiwe Norush and Sonwabile Mayaye, did a wonderful job as the event MCs. Mayaye stated that he learnt to uphold the academy’s value of excellence by concentrating on his work and by reading.

Norush said she enjoyed reading the book Ujamela where she learned the importance of telling the truth and the value of community.

School founder and principal Waahida Tolbert said the highlight was the Founder’s Awards. “Four pupils, Rethabilie Shasha, Mayaye, Angel Makupa and Rearabilwe Mamokabe received the awards for consistently upholding the academy’s values of love, curiosity, excellence and courage,” Tolbert said.

Tolbert added that the school’s other highlights were the Pre-Grade R and Grade R pupils who achieved significant academic gains measured by quarterly assessments in literacy and mathematics. The children moved from 57 percent, below Grade R level expectation in the first maths assessment, to 42 percent in third term assessment, meeting the grade level expectation, with the remaining children quickly approaching the same expectation.

Grade R teacher Nelisiwe Mhlongo said it was most rewarding helping to mould 30 children with different personalities from scratch into disciplined pupils capable of rising and meeting expectations of university-level education in several years to come.
