Schoolchildren rewarded for their hard work

HOUGHTON - The Union of Jewish Women, based in Houghton, recently treated more than 50 schoolchildren to a day filled with cake, ice cream, a sumptuous meal and Christmas goodies, with the older children receiving books and stationery from the union to kick-start their 2016 academic year.

The children from local primary schools regularly participate in homework activities and educational classes at Alexandra Aftercare Centre, which is located on the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s premises.

According to project manager of the union, Cindy Kree, the centre takes care of Grade 5, 6 and 7 pupils and assists them with their study and supplementary educational needs to prepare them for high school and to ensure the foundation phase of their education is built on solid ground.

On the day, children also received awards for academic excellence in various subjects, regular attendance at the centre and for their inquisitive minds which kept them asking pertinent questions and seeking guidance.

Besides the assistance they receive with their schoolwork, Kree said the children also receive afternoon meals and refreshments.

Kree said Alexandra Aftercare Centre is flooded with a growing number of younger children seeking educational assistance, which prompted the union to jump in and assist. This means the union will need more volunteers who can attend to the children. “We, therefore, appeal to interested people to come forward,” Kree said.
