KwaBhekilanga tops again in matric results

ALEXANDRA - Despite the drop in the 2015 national matric results compared to the previous year, Alex’s five secondary schools, instead, improved – and notably so in some instances.

The national results announced by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga on 5 January dropped from 75.8 percent pass in 2014 to 70.7 this year, a drop of 5.1 percent.

The only blot in Alex schools was at the seemingly perennial top achiever Kwa Bhekilanga High School which dropped by 3.2 percent, from 94.1 percent in 2014, but the school still leads as the top achiever with a 90 percent pass rate last year; while its four counterparts edged upwards, signalling a change in performance may be on the horizon.

Alex High School, in second position, moved from 83.3 percent in 2014 to 89.13 percent, an upward shift of 5.8 percent.

Eastbank High School recorded the highest variation of 7.17 percent from 69.3 percent in 2014 to 76.47 percent last year.

Minerva Secondary School improved by 2.11 percent from 64.4 percent in 2014 to 66.51 percent.

And Realogile Secondary School sealed the bottom with a pass rate of 64 percent in last year compared with 59 percent in 2014, an improvement of 5 percent.

Announcing the results, the Joburg East District director, Gauteng Department of Education Mnyamezeli Ndevu said the township’s overall results were better than most schools in his area, inclusive of those from more affluent areas. Ndevu was quick to point out that the results should not deceive as the trend still needed to consolidate and be consistent on an annual basis.

Also, he said the public’s perception should not be that township or rural schools can never outperform the well-resourced ones as history has shown some rural schools – with no electricity and laboratories – recording 100 percent pass rates.

The following is a four-year comparison of the five schools from 2012 to date:

  • Realogile Secondary School 73.7, 70.2, 59 and 64 percent.
  • Mineva Secondary School 69, 83.6, 64.4 and 66.51 percent.
  • Eastbank High School 67.2, 86.8, 69.3 and 76.47 percent.
  • Alex High School 51.1, 87.7, 83.3 and 89.13 percent.
  • KwaBhekilanga Secondary School 65.4, 97.6, 94.1 and 90.9.
