A man who has been on the run from the law since November 2010 has reappeared in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
Skhumbuzo Khumalo (33), also known as Fortune Moyo, was rearrested in January this year, five years after skipping bail for a robbery charge he allegedly committed when he was 28 years old with two accomplices.
The charges against his co-accused were dropped when he, the main suspect, failed to attend several court sessions.
The three allegedly robbed a woman who was in a taxi with them. The incident occurred one midnight in Sandton when the woman was travelling home from work. One of the accused was the taxi driver.
The court heard that after the victim answered a call on her cellphone, Khumalo allegedly grabbed the cellphone and her handbag and told her that it was a robbery. They then forced her out of the taxi and drove off.
The victim told another taxi driver parked nearby the incident, and the two followed the accused’s taxi which they encountered at a police roadblock on Louis Botha Avenue. The victim informed the police about the robbery and pointed out the suspects. They were arrested and her stolen items were allegedly found on Khumalo.
Khumalo and his co-accused had appeared in court on February 2011 and were given bail, after which he disappeared until his rearrest this January.
