Schools prepare for Inter-Districts Athletics Competition

ALEXANDRA - A healthy mind is a healthy body was what some Alex school children achieved recently during the schools' athletics competition for the Joburg East District held at the Eastbank Track and Fields.

Alex pupils from 12 schools in the area achieved healthy bodies recently during the SA Schools’ Athletics Competition for the Joburg East District held at Eastbank Track and Fields.

Exploiting the world-class turf on the tracks, the children engaged in the annual event in preparation for the Inter-Districts Competition which, this year, will be held at Germiston Stadium from 10 to 12 February.

The event co-ordinator, Lota Kekana of Skeen Primary School, said the occasion was part of the schools’ extra curriculum and sporting activities, which are central to physical health and sharpening the mind and attention of the children. “Running keeps them physically fit and balanced and exposes some to talents they could exploit as careers,” he said.

Kekana encouraged those who were not selected to take part this year to try again for next year by preparing with regular running, exercises and taking part in the schools’ cross country competitions which will be held in September.
