BLOG: Killer won’t disclose where he left body

Garry Hertzberg, practicing Attorney at Dewey Hertzberg Levy Attorneys and Presenter on The Laws of Life on Cliffcentral.com, writes:

SOUTH African-born Kerry Winter was repeatedly bashed with a baseball bat and her head was then slammed against her porch steps in Dubai.

Her murderer, ex-boyfriend Mark Arnold, then dragged her into his car and drove off.

Her body has never been found.

A vital part of the grieving process for any person who has lost a loved one is the burial. Though the formalities may differ, depending on an individual’s beliefs, a burial helps the departed person’s loved ones to come to terms with their loss. Winter’s family has never had this luxury and Arnold refuses to disclose where he hid her body.

Kerry’s brother, Kurt, staged his own investigation into the murder and disappearance of his sister in Dubai. He was tremendously disturbed by the fact that when he arrived at the crime scene, there was blood splatter everywhere and it was clear that no forensic investigation had been done.

After conducting extensive research, Kurt was able to establish that Arnold had access to a boat and had purchased a large waterproof bag. It is for this reason that Kurt believes his sister’s corpse was discarded in the ocean. Others speculate that she was left in the desert. A search for her body would be a lot like looking for a needle in a haystack unless Arnold discloses exactly where he disposed of this innocent woman’s body.

I recently spoke to Winter’s mother, Carol, who said she would do anything to know exactly where her daughter’s remains were. She is desperate for closure. Although Arnold has been sentenced to life in prison, she cannot come to terms with the death of her daughter. For Carol, justice is an illusion unless Winter’s body is found.

No mother should have to endure the death of her child. No brother should have to stare at his sister’s blood splatters for answers. But most importantly, no family should have to wonder where on earth the remains of a loved one have been hidden. Arnold has not only taken the life of Kerry but also the quality of life of her family.
