Lawyer in court on assault charge
ALEXANDRA - A lawyer will appear at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on 11 March on charges of assault and grievous bodily harm on his girlfriend.
The assault was reported by the lawyer’s girlfriend of 4th Avenue at Alexandra Police Station on 3 March. It was reported that the accused asked the victim to come to his residence in Ext 9 after work and she consented.
On arrival at about 6.30pm, he was said to have asked her to iron his clothes and cook supper while he joined his friends outside for a drink. A while later, the lawyer came into the house and the victim closed the door behind him. She claimed to have informed him of her displeasure in his relationship with another woman, and that she would look for another man to care and love her if he didn’t end the other relationship.
The accused was said to have threatened that he would rearrange her face so no one would want to love her. She responded by telling him to go to hell which infuriated the accused who allegedly pushed her to the floor and repeatedly kicked her in the ribs and upper body. Afterwards, he allegedly picked up the hot iron and aimed it at her face, but missed and burnt her on her left arm. A struggle ensued and she managed to get a hold of the iron and threw it at the man, hitting him in the stomach. He allegedly picked up the iron again and aimed it at her face but missed and instead burnt her on the right arm and shoulder before pushing her out of the house and throwing her handbag at her.
She said she picked up the handbag and ran off, with him chasing her.
The victim claimed to have quickly picked up and broken a glass bottle with which she threatened him, forcing the suspect to retreat. Just then, one of the accused’s friends appeared and she told him of the incident. The two boarded a taxi which she claimed he paid for and they parted ways near the police station.
The victim then reported the incident.
