Your say on the Guptagate saga
JOHANNEBSURG – With the current Guptagate saga making rounds in the media, we took to the streets to ask the public what their thoughts on the matter are.
NATASHA GEBHARD: A lot goes through my mind. It’s frustrating that we don’t have the proper controls in place to prevent things like this happening.
KERRY WARDLE: Have you heard the Nando’s radio ad about Guptagate? I think that says it all.
BRADLEY DANIELS: I think any conspiracy story or political controversy in SA is always a gossip point. But when a minister comes forward with a couple of pieces of evidence, it adds a lot of fuel to the fire. And the people start pushing government for answers. These are answers that a government shouldn’t have to provide if corruption wasn’t something the people have to worry about.
RICHARD FRENCH: I think that anywhere else in the world, if a member of parliament claimed to be approached by a private company and offered a position, there would be a thorough investigation and I think that needs to happen. But it would have to happen by an impartial body. The question is: Does such an impartial body exist in South Africa? I’d say an investigation needs to happen, but whether it will bear any fruit … who knows.
