Motsepe puts his money where his mouth is
JOBURG – The Motsepe Foundation has invested R117,5 million into the development of schools sport and eisteddfod, choral and traditional music.
The Motsepe Foundation and the Department of Basic Education have launched an R117.5-million partnership for the development of schools football, netball and choral and traditional music in all schools – private or government.
The deal was signed on 24 November last year when the Motsepe Foundation announced the sponsorship over a 10-year period, which is over and above other activities that the foundation is involved in, including the ABC Motsepe League.
Partners to the agreement include the South African Football Association (Safa) and the departments of Arts and Culture, and Sports and Recreation.
In the first five years of the sponsorship, an amount of R55 million will be allocated to the Kay Motsepe Schools Football Cup; the ABC Motsepe Eisteddfod, Choral and Traditional Music; and the Kay Motsepe Schools Netball Cup. In the following five years, the foundation will contribute another R62.5 million.
All 25 000 public and private schools in South Africa, from rural and urban areas, have been invited to participate in all three competitions.
The Kay Motsepe Schools Football Cup has been running for the past 10 years and is regarded as having the largest prize money in the world for schools football. The schools that win the competition in each of the nine provinces of South Africa receive prize money of R100 000 each.
The overall winning school receives R1 million. The school that comes second receives prize money of R600 000 and the third-placed school gets R400 000.
