On this day in history: South Africa held its first democratic elections

On April 27 1994, South Africa held its first democratic elections and Nelson Mandela became the president of the new South Africa.

A new national flag was introduced and the African National Congress(ANC) won the election.

The previous national flag which had flown over South Africa since 31 May 1928 was lowered just before midnight and the new flag was raised. It was flown on a plane across the sky on 10 May 1994 when Mandela was inaugurated as the president. Take a look at pictures from the election campaign and voting day:
