Multimillionaire mayoral candidate mobbed in Alex

ALEXANDRA - The multimillionaire Democratic Alliance's Johannesburg mayoral candidate of the Black Like Me cosmetic business empire, Herman Mashaba was mobbed in Alexandra by well-wishers who bombarded him with searching questions about his quest and vision for the hot seat.

They wanted to be satisfied that if they gave him their vote, he would deliver and not let them down. One resident wanted to know what plans Mashaba has for small businesses, while others wanted to know his stand on corruption, cadre deployment and job creation.

“I have said it time and time again and I will repeat for the benefit of you guys here today. In a city council run by me, there will be no room for corruption and anyone found to be corrupt or with his or her hands in the till will be dealt with swiftly,” Mashaba said.

“I am not going to tolerate any corrupt individuals, neither will I employ people on party lines nor deploy unqualified cadres to powerful and crucial positions simply because they are my comrades, homeboys or relatives.”Such employment practices will be done away with, including the hiring of consultants. I believe the reason why our City employs so many consultants is simply because of cadre deployment of unqualified people who do not have a clue of what they are supposed to do.”

On job creation and the promotion of small businesses, Mashaba said small businesses were drivers of the economic engine all over the world nowadays. “And I will ensure they are elevated to a status they deserve. I will open a fully-fledged desk in my office that solely deals with the promotion of the small business sector and ways of hooking them up with potential funders and partners.

“I will ensure the economy of the city works and that it grows by at least five percent per annum in order to create the much-needed jobs. Johannesburg is the economic hub and powerhouse of this country and it needs an efficient and vibrantly working economy. If Joburg works, then South Africa will work.”

Mashaba said elected councillors will have a performance contract with him and if they can’t deliver, they will have to vacate their positions. “The bosses of this city will not be Mashaba and his councillors but the residents of Johannesburg who will decide on the people to lead them.”
