Pholosho Secondary’s music fortune rises
ALEXANDRA – Pholosho Secondary choir sets their sights on national music champions award.
Two Pholosho Junior Secondary School teachers have vowed to turn around the musical fortunes of the school.
This after the school’s choir sailed through as regional and district winners of the SA Schools Choral Eisteddfod choral competition. They have now set their eyes on the provincial contest en route to the national grand prize.
Principal Dingaan Kubheka said the dramatic rise of the choir only started in March this year through the efforts of teachers Philiswa Mcoyana and Tsepang Thuba.
Mcoyana credited the 60-member Grade 7 choir’s success to the children’s natural talent, devotion, determination and passion. “Our desire is to win and revive music, which comes easy for local children in a township renowned for its immense music talent, and a national cultural and artistic heritage which has seen many from the township grace local, national and international stages,” Mcoyana said.
She added that the choir’s success would assist in motivating for the inclusion of music in the school’s curriculum to help children less academically inclined to explore it as a future career.
Thuba said music helped to restore confidence in children. “It makes them realise their talent and capabilities, and develops concentration skills necessary for their schoolwork, self-awareness and management in all aspects of life,” Thuba said.
He added that music also kept pupils occupied at the school which had no space to engage in physical extra-curricular activities. He said the choir’s rising music image would also help elevate the importance of visual art and dance as other school codes.
“We can’t wait for the provincial contest,” he enthused.
