Midrand plot robbers sentenced
ALEXANDRA - Men get 10 and 7 years for Midrand plot robbery.
Two Ivory Park men pleaded guilty and were sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to seven and ten years imprisonment for the armed robbery of seven residents of a Midrand plot on 26 January this year. Their accomplice escaped and is wanted.
Thabo Nkosi (37) who had a previous five-year prison record for robbery, was imprisoned for 10 years; and Kamugelo Nyalungu (21), a first-time offender, was sentenced to seven years for robbing the residents of their cellphones, as well as a gun from a resident who is a security guard.
Both were also sentenced to eight years for illegal gun possession and three years for the ammunition, which were suspended for five years.
After the Midrand robbery, the accused ran away but were chased and caught by private security guards who had been alerted to the incident by a witness. The victims were said to have joined in the chase and beaten the accused after they were apprehended, resulting in them spending 15 days in Tembisa Hospital for treatment before appearing in court.
The stolen items were recovered, except for the stolen gun. The robbers’ gun was, however, recovered.
