Fine art becomes accessible
JOHANNESBURG – Enjoy a day of fun, sun, music and art.
Some of the best art available in Johannesburg will ‘pop up’ in Parkview for an exciting day, during which timeless art pieces will become accessible to all.
Ann Roberts, organiser of the Pop Up With event, is working with David Krut Projects to bring unsold pieces of art out of the drawers and back into play.
“The boundaries of a closed gallery are that the exhibition is held with the works of select artists and it usually runs for a month or so, and the works that don’t get sold during the exhibition are packed away into drawers,” Roberts explained.
Opening the drawers: A Limited Edition Print Pop Up Shop with David Krut Projects, set to take place at Parktown High School for Girls on 25 June, aims to make art accessible to those who wouldn’t consider themselves connoisseurs.
“We want to make the art accessible to a broader market so that anyone could have a piece on their walls.”
The day will offer buyers the opportunity to purchase work by up-and-coming and established artists from a range of collaborators including the likes of William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Deborah Bell, Wilma Cruise, Sam Nhlengethwa, Stephen Hobbs, Maja Maljevi and Willem Boshoff, among others.
“It’s not really a gallery,” Roberts explained, “It’s the antithesis of a gallery in the sense that there will be no walls and nothing hanging.”
In addition to this forward-looking way of exhibiting art, the event will also be filled with music from live bands and kiddies activities to keep children occupied while their parents make those important, cognitive decisions regarding which piece to place above the fireplace.
This event will be a comfortable environment for people who don’t usually buy art, thus making it easier to choose a piece that they love.
There will truly be something for everyone, so this is one day not to miss.
