Mighty Heroes maintain their dominence of Alex football

ALEXANDRA - An exciting final of the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games 2016 await the crowds tomorrow at the No 3 Square Grounds.

Malandela Mighty Heroes has once again demonstrated why it is one of the best  football clubs in Alexandra after it dominated the finals of the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games 2016.

The club, which is coached by a talented youth coach, Vincent Rammoni, popularly known to his players as the ‘Young Master’ because of his youth, registered two teams in the finals.

The finals of the Map Games 2016 will take place tomorrow (16 June) at the No 3 Square Grounds in Alexandra and Rammoni will be coaching his two sides in the U15 and U17 divisions.

His other team, the U13 missed qualification for the final by a whisker after they were deadlocked at 0-0 with Royal Tigers. As per rule of the competition, the two teams went straight to penalties and Tigers went through to the finals.

Tigers are both owned and coached by yet another youth, Thembinkosi ‘Tiger’ Matholengwe and his U13 team are an exciting lot as they won their division league of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association league in their maiden season last year.

If Rammoni’s U13s had qualified for the Map finals, they would have met their nemesis in Real Madrid. Mighty Heroes and Madrid are like the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates of Alexandra.

Both these U13 teams have immense ball handling and shuffling skills which often mesmerise the crowds attending Alex football matches and both are often used for exhibition matches during big events around the township.

Mighty Heroes’ U17 team will meet Gunners in the final while the U15s will collide with Phomolong All Stars. The other division, the U20s, final will be contested by Limpopo’s Baroka FC and Alex Young Lions.

Last year, Mighty Heroes’ U13 and U17 teams were the champions of the Map Games and it will be interesting to see whether the club will still emerge victorious with two teams being crowned champions again this year. The finals of the Map Games begin at 10am.
